Brain-Poking Advice for the Coming Year

I wasn’t sure what to talk about this month. Thanksgiving is upon us, and I have much to be grateful for…even if my books aren’t selling well enough to let me retire to some haunted house out in the woods. (With Internet.)

But I hate talking about myself. I’m sure most of you would agree with that sentiment.

So I thought, “What’s more useful to my readers?”

Well, how about a little advice for us going into 2026? Things to consider, thoughts to provoke more thought, and so on. A veritable brain-poke.

I collected some advice here, from sage minds like Merlin Mann, Robin Williams, Benjamin Franklin, and (if I may be so bold) myself.

Thoughts and Ponderings 1

ON ACTION

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.

If there’s a book that means a lot to you, buy five print copies. It helps the author, plus now you can give a free copy to a friend whom you think would love it. (No, that’s not me, that’s Merlin Mann.)

Your calendar represents a portfolio of promises to your future self. Treat it that way.

ON THE MYSTERY OF LIFE

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.

We are an impossibility in an impossible universe.

You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.

Pondering Cyclist in Italy

I often stop in the street while biking. Inspiration can strike at any moment, you know. Just like a semi.

PRACTICAL IDEAS

If you’re not sure what you want, it’s almost definitely more sleep.

Always carry a good pen.

Nothing changes until you say something.

Find a hobby you can do easily, wherever you like. Even if it’s an hour a week. It makes the other hours more bearable.

That back corner of my brain that whimpers whenever I poke it

Until next time, let me ask you. What’s an adage you live by?
